Who will be the Top Dog in Your Household?

From:  Carolyn Read

Dear Friend

So many people get confused by the term TOP DOG or even PACK LEADER.  What sort of an image do these terms conjure up for you?  When you think of these words does a picture of you conquering a so-called “dominant” puppy by doing some of the following:-

  • gruff voice;
  • standing over the puppy so that it trembles in fear;
  • rubbing the puppy’s nose in its business because the toilet training hasn’t gone to plan;
  • a loud voice yelling “NO” and slapping the puppy on the side of the nose when it bites you.

come to mind?

Do you think your puppy does all of these things on purpose specifically to annoy you? Do you think that puppies are pre-destined to be dominant over humans and so we being the superior species have to “get in first” to make sure we are dominant over the dog?

Unfortunately, although people may not admit it this could be a perception or attitude that is subconsciously built into our psyche – that we must dominate every creature below us.  I am not going to get too technical here, but how would it be if I could shatter these perceptions and show you the “reality” from the pup’s perspective instead?

Believe it or not, puppies are not out to deliberately annoy, anger, frustrate or, yes, even dominate us!  Like us, all they want is a happy life with a family who cares and nurtures them and a family they can bond with.  That doesn’t sound so bad, does it?

The misconception happens because we, as humans, don’t understand dogs and their natural behaviour patterns – things they have been hard-wired with since the beginning of time.  This is their survival instinct which has been passed down through the ages and is a permanent part of their genetic makeup.

So back to the behaviours that are misconstrued as being dominating:

  • Puppy Biting – all puppies will mouth and they will bite.  They don’t have hands to explore their new environments with so what do they use?  They use their mouths!  Not to damage or hurt – but to explore, to play, to chew.  YES, puppy biting is just a normal behaviour to a dog.
  • Toileting – like humans, all dogs need to eliminate.  If you have a puppy all you need to do is train the puppy where the appropriate toilet area is.  This doesn’t happen overnight but through repetition and learning they will get it.
  • Jumping Up yes, this can be perceived as a dominant thing and kneeing a pup in the chest is actually encouraging the dog to perform that more.

Do you see HOW your biggest fears and misconceptions, despite wanting to achieve a good outcome, could actually set you up to  DAMAGE not BUILD your relationship with your new puppy?

So let me share with you another perception of TOP DOG and PACK LEADER concepts….

In the wild, yes, there is a top dog or leader of the pack, however this is based on a mutual respect and does not involve intimidation or aggression.  A pack leader will establish itself as leader by means of established and maintained ritualised behaviour patterns, which does not need to include fighting or aggression of any sort.

So how does this apply to our everyday lives?  True, our pets don’t live in the wild and have to hunt for food, everything is provided.  Food is a great tool that we can use to help our puppies through rewarding the behaviour we like and simply not rewarding the behaviour we don’t like.

If we can be calm and patient while the pup is learning – remember we make mistakes too – and treat the pup with kindness and respect then that will be reciprocated.

TRAIN A PUP TIME’S TOP DOG PACKAGE can show you how to establish yourself as the Top Dog by using a set of techniques so that not only will your puppy respect you as Top Dog but you will also respect the puppy for who he/she is.  And, not only that, you will have a greater respect for yourself because of the achievements that will be evident by the improvement of your puppy’s behaviour.
