Dear Puppy Owner, (or Soon-To-Be Puppy Owner)
If you’re a new puppy owner or if you’ve had a puppy in the past and …
- made mistakes with puppy training and swore that you “would never do that again”;
- never owned a dog before and are not quite sure about the best way to house train your puppy and help him/her learn your household rules;
- would like puppy socialization classes where you know your pup will be getting the best possible care without fear or bullying or becoming too timid around other pups in a safe environment;
- want to learn how to become an effective, kind and respected pack leader….
…then you’ve come to the right place. In just a few weeks let me show you how to have a family dog who will like people, in particular children and men, and learn appropriate dog socialization skills. If you want your pup to grow into a dog you can establish a loving, long-lasting relationship with then read on…
Did you know that according to the Pet Rescue Directory, there are currently 274 dogs in rescue shelters or foster homes needing a good home here in Western Australia alone, and 1,887 currently listed Australia-wide looking for a good home?
That’s a whole lot of people who take on a dog and for whatever reason, have to surrender the animal as they are unable to manage them.
Yet, at the same time, there is more access to dog obedience clubs, puppy schools and general dog training information and advice than ever before. You can easily find books, DVD’s, TV shows, classes, articles, magazines, websites and more. And most of it is low cost or even free to obtain (just take a trip to your local library, not to mention the information that is on the internet!) There is definitely not a shortage.
So one wonders why, with all of this dog training information available, are rescue shelters bursting at the seams and consistently full trying desperately to re-home animals that are dumped or surrendered or rescued from neglect. It is sad that dogs are the victims of a “throw-away” society.
Here at Train A Pup Time, you will learn how to understand and train your puppy better, not only so you can value him/her from the beginning, but give you the skills to deal with frustrating puppy behaviour which can cause you some grief. As you learn to work with your puppy and not against him/her you will find that you will cherish your new puppy a whole lot more and he/she will become an integral part of your family.
I’m guessing that if you’ve made it this far you are possibly somewhat familiar with my story. Please sit back and relax while I cover it again briefly (Trust me…the background is important for what I am going to share with you next!)
When I got my first puppy I had absolutely no idea about dogs, their behaviour or how to train them. My Sophie, a Golden Retriever, was a sheer delight and every dog in sight was a playmate. There was no such thing as puppy pre school in those days and we were told not to take the puppy out until they were fully vaccinated. This was fine for Sophie. The only thing was that the dog training methods back in those days were based on force and compulsion rather than reward-based so do you think I could hold her attention get her to perform any sort of dog obedience to a high standard – NOT ON YOUR LIFE! But she was a great pet and she fitted into the home situation very well, was good with people and other dogs.
Next along came Elliott and once again, puppy pre school was not available, so I kept him secluded until he was fully vaccinated at 16 weeks. However, when he came out at 16 weeks of age he was already showing signs of dog aggressive tendencies towards other puppies and dogs.
This was a complete new ball game for me!
I had no idea what to do – I kept taking him to dog training classes and his obedience actually became pretty good considering my dismal efforts and learning what to do (once again, using compulsion and not knowing how to use food treats to motivate him). It was hard work!
To cut a long story short, he did not “grow out” of his dog aggressive ways but, in fact, they actually escalated as he grew into his teenage years and once the hormones started flowing he would get aggressive if other dogs came too close.
Oh, how I wish I knew then what I know now! I would have done things so differently!
His dog aggression was a problem pretty much throughout his life despite our efforts at dog training, at one stage, to 3 different clubs 3 nights per week. Thankfully he did mellow in his twilight years. And despite all of this he attained a Companion Dog Title in obedience and a Novice Retrieving Dog Title in the field of retrieving.
BUT……WHAT IF…….PUPPY PRE SCHOOL HAD BEEN AVAILABLE
BACK THEN?
I personally think things would have been a lot different. But I can’t speculate on what could have been.
Because of having a dog like this I ended up getting involved in instructing for dog clubs and learning more about dog behaviour. Together with a friend, we started conducting puppy pre school classes as a hobby after attending a 2 day seminar with Dr Ian Dunbar, the instigator of puppy pre school in America. And so Train A Pup Time was born….
So, now I am continuing with Train A Pup Time and love to see people getting great results from the puppy training techniques that are taught. (Click here to see what others say). The best thing is that these techniques can work for all breeds of puppies. When dealing with animals, or people for that matter, we need to bear in mind that each one is an individual and so I assist you to work individually with your puppy.
In this PUPPY BASIC PACKAGE, which consists of 5 weeks of puppy classes I share the principles of dog behaviour and socialization so that get you what you want from your puppy, so then he can get what he wants. The focus is on puppy socialization experiences and assisting you to effectively manage your puppies in the home and giving you techniques to become a respected ‘pack leader’. The most critical thing when the puppy is aged between 8 to 12 weeks is to help him to like people and other puppies and dogs.
In fact, we start from very basics so you can learn how to help your puppy to learn to fit in with your lifestyle from the start which will help you avoid the most common dog problems.
The 5 week course helps your puppy to socialise in a backyard environment so puppies learn to run and play with other puppies in plenty of space. They learn that running through an agility tunnel is great fun. We use objects to expose them to noises which could potentially be quite spooky and show you how to introduce them to noisy equipment such as lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, etc; help them to enjoy handling by strangers; a few basic obedience skills and manners exercises.

THIS PUPPY PRE SCHOOL PROGRAMME
WILL DELIVER MUCH MORE …
Each week you will get to learn some new stuff plus we keep revising the things that are critical to make sure you’re on track – for example, puppy biting behaviour – this is Urgent and Critical! Teaching your puppy to be safe around people is the most important priority of Train A Pup Time. Knowing your dog has learnt “good bite inhibition”, and that means safety, = happy family and happy dog! If you have questions about how to deal with a particular issue then we will discuss it in class – every puppy that comes through puppy pre school IS different and therefore different issues arise.
The following are just some of the main things we cover to help you integrate your new puppy into the household:
- Family Interaction With Puppy – these are exercises to help you establish important rules around family members. Some exercises from this category will include biting behaviour, resource guarding, attention, pack leadership.
- Care and Handling – this will cover exercises in handling your puppy as well as other people’s puppies. It is imporant to get puppies used to being handled in ways that is not natural for them, eg. hugging. This will also include settling down.
- Good House and Toilet Manners – this section includes exercises and strategies on how to toilet train your puppy effectively, short and long term confinement, crate training, leaving things, sitting nicely for lead being clipped on to the collar, .
- Interactions with Other Puppies – there will be several short off lead play sessions so puppies learn to play appropriately with other puppies without becoming bullied or intimidated.
- Interactions with Other People – this will include exercises that have your puppy interacting with strange people. Games like Pass The Puppy and swapping puppies will give your puppy confidence around strangers.
- New Experiences - will be with obstacles, surfaces, smells, sights, sounds, touch and motion. There are a number of exercises that can be done to socialise puppies to all sorts of new experiences. The more they come across at this age the quicker they learn to be accepting of things they are not familiar with.
You won’t need to take copious notes during each class because you will receive handouts which will be a reminder of important information .
If you get stuck and are not sure then I am only an email or phone call away to assist.
THIS PROGRAMME WORKS FOR EVEN THE MOST SCEPTICAL!
Unfortunately some people do not attend puppy pre school as they may think that whatever behaviour is happening that the puppy will just “grow out of it”! This is a myth! And, in fact, the opposite happens, puppy behaviour, once established, will just escalate – Believe me – I know from my own experience!
The smart and responsible dog owners will get the right dog training advice in the beginning so that they know how to cope as the dog grows into “Juvenile Delinquency” and “Adulthood”.
Do you want to be one of the dog owners who has to get a dog behaviourist (at a great expense) to help sort out the problems of your adult dog, which could have, in fact, not become a problem in the first place from a small investment of time and money at the outset? If you leave it too late then puppy behaviour becomes well established and can escalate until it does become a problem!
YES! YOU CAN AVOID THIS SCENARIO!
Simply by choosing to take advantage of this Train A Pup Time Puppy Basic Package you will get enough information to help you understand how to manage and train your puppy as he/she develops.
And with an ongoing support base and newly introduced KinderPuppy Course, you will not be alone in your journey with your puppy….unlike many other puppy pre-schools who conduct puppy classes and then that’s it – you’re on your own!
It is possible for you to have a long-lasting and wonderful bond and relationship with your dog!
Our mission is to keep dogs OUT of rescue shelters and help people to appreciate their dog’s uniqueness and strengthen the bond between dog and man!
So I’m inviting you to enrol in the PUPPY BASIC PACKAGE today!
WHAT WILL THE INVESTMENT BE?
The price for the Puppy Basic Package is $100.00.
If you wish to book and pay for both the Puppy Basic Package and the KinderPuppy Course the investment will be $220.00. This will be 10 weeks of socialisation and training combined.
