Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it so important to get my puppy into puppy pre-school?

More and more vets, dog breeders, pet shops and dog trainers are now recognizing the importance of early socialisation and training from 8 weeks of age.

Many dogs are euthanased due to problem behavioural issues rather than due to contracting disease.

It is important to continue your puppy’s interaction with other puppies and people, including men and children, after they leave their mother and litter-mates.

The more people, dogs, different situations, noises, handling and objects your puppy is introduced to during the 8 to 12 week old age group the more confident, happy and safe your puppy will become as an adult dog.

“Train A Pup Time” Puppy Pre-school offers a controlled and safe environment where your puppy will be able to interact with strange people, dogs and various objects and situations without fear.

We show you how to develop your pup into a safe, enjoyable companion.

.

How old should my puppy be?

‘Train A Pup Time” is designed specifically for 8 to 14 week old puppies who have not fully completed their vaccinations and are not yet able to join a dog club.

This is the critical time for learning and exposing them to new environments, people, dogs, objects and situations.  Your puppy must have had at least one vaccination and it is necessary to sight the vaccination certificate.  Puppies not socialised during this period may start to show signs of fear and nervousness around people and other dogs.

The closer to 8 weeks you can enrol into puppy pre-school the better.

.

What will my puppy learn?

It is not only what your pup will learn but what you will learn also.

At “Train A Pup Time” we believe it is important for you to learn how to teach your puppy good manners.

We cover such things as mouthing and biting, toilet training, chewing and general behaviour in the home.

Your puppy will learn some basic obedience such as sit, down, stand, and basic exercises for teaching puppies to ‘com’ when called.

We also include puppy play time which is carefully supervised and hands on socialisation exercises – plus much more.

Each week you will receive Rover’s Reminders of things to work on at home and handy hints and tips.

.

.

How much do the classes cost and how long do they last?

Are children permitted to attend classes?

Yes, children will be permitted to join in on the class.  Children under 10 years of age must be accompanied by a second adult.  If you are not able to get another adult to supervise the children then the children will not be permitted to come to class.  It is not possible to supervise young children and train a dog at the same time.

What is the Payment Policy?

In order to secure your place in a class full payment will be required either prior to or on the day of the first class or consultation.  This can be made via direct internet transfer, cash or cheque.  Refer to the How To Pay page.

What about cancellations?

Once payment has been made:

Prior to 3 working days a full refund will be made.

Within 3 working days of the commencement of the course a 50% cancellation fee will apply.

If you are unable to attend a course on a particular day then you may transfer to the next course.  Once your course has started then you may transfer to another day if it is available.  For puppy pre-school classes you may make up the classes until your 5 weeks are completed.  For the KinderPuppy Course this is a set and structured programme so if you miss a class you will be sent the information to work on during the week.  It will not be possible to review what you missed on the next week you return.

Once a class has commenced:

Once a class has commenced and you are no longer able to continue then no refund will be made for classes that are missed.  However, if notice is given beforehand of non-attendance then we will attempt to make find a place for you and your dog on a subsequent course for the class that you missed should there be any vacancy.

Partial refunds will be given on a pro-rata basis if, for any reason, if part of the course has been delivered but circumstances prevent us from completing it.

What should I bring?

You will need to wear closed in shoes (no thongs or sandals).

Plenty of high value, soft meaty food treats cut up into very small pieces, eg. sausage, chicken, soft liver treats, polony etc.

The treats work better if they are very motivating that the pup will want to focus on and something the pup doesn’t normally get fed every day.

You may bring your own water and water bowl.

And, of course, the puppy on a soft collar and lead.  Chain collars are not appropriate for puppies (or any dog for that matter)
